Japanese Yatate writing case
Late 19th/early 20thc Japanese bronze Yatate with crab decoration to the lid.
A yatate (pronounced yah-tah-teh) is a Japanese portable writing set. It would contain a traditional Japanese bamboo brush and an ink pot filled with cotton or silk which holds liquid sumi ink, invented during the Kamakura era (1185-1333) as a more convenient way to carry ink, which previously had to be ground and mixed with water when needed. The form of Yatate with a hinged pot was designed during the Edo period.
